Here are some of my first round entries for the Waterstone’s Picture This competition in 2011. The competition was to find a new children’s illustrator for Michael Morpurgo’s retelling of Beauty and the Beast to be published by HarperCollins in 2012. I was absolutely stunned when I won!
We were asked to create characters and scenes from the well-loved story – without having seen Michael’s text.
Now having finished illustrating the final book, these initial characters have moved on, and grown–up a few years - all with the inspiration of Michael Morpurgo’s magical story telling.
Find out more about the competition and the book here, and see a photo of me looking rather shell-shocked, alongside Michael Morpurgo as the winner was announced at Waterstones in Piccadilly.
